The biggest thing I think I learned from the process of video making is about expectation. I remember hearing / reading somewhere that when you get into making art, often it is because you perceive yourself as having ’good’ taste — meaning you consume art that is good. However, art can be difficult to fully get into because making progress or becoming more proficient in it requires you to be bad first — something that is hard to do when the art you consume is at a much higher skill level or has a higher proficiency floor. Something that was mentioned in the reading is how film specifically requires you to adjust your expectations as you go through the creation process so that the film ends up somewhere in between what you had envisioned and what the external circumstances allow (time, software, equipment, etc) for. That was certainly evident in this project as I started with one idea and kept having to switch directions / change my original idea through the editing process or even go back and re-film. I had the idea of re-creating an analog horror film you can find on niche YouTube channels. Even though the genre typically has a ’homemade’ feel, I still think a large amount of skill is needed to do the genre justice — for now I’ll keep on practicing.
